Hi Vanilla Sugar, and welcome to LiveTrigger Magazine! We are really excited to support you in this new exciting release. Tell us everything about it.
Thank you so much for having me! My debut album, She, is now available to stream and purchase from your favorite music retailer. There are so many diverse songs on the album. I can honestly say that not one track sounds the same. I call the style “HorrorPop”. There is a pop sensibility to the album, but the lyrical content can be pretty insane. This is the first time I have open lyrically about my inner demons. It feels like a big step for me personally. She is composed of ten synth driven songs over captivating beats, with haunting vocals layered on top. I would love to know what you think of the album. There was a lot of blood, sweat, and glitter put into the making of it.
What is the process you use to create your music?
The songs usually start off as a musical idea. Typically it begins with a synth melody, followed by beats and then filling out the rest with different instruments and sounds. The vocals are added last. Sometimes I will go in to the vocal booth and just free style. Occasionally full lines will make the cut, but there are times where just a certain phrase sticks out and I’ll go with that. I also have a tendency to write lyrical ideas and melodies while stuck in LA traffic. Thank goodness for voice memos!
What are your favourite artists and/or composers?
I am a huge fan of Mindless Self Indulgence, Grimes, and KoRn! I could listen to any of their albums all day. Something for any mood.
Do they have anything in common?
Coincidentally, they do!! Mindless Self Indulgence is much more electronic than KoRn, who is more guitar driven. However, MSI remixed a KoRn song for an album, and have also remixed a Grimes song. I think that’s how I discovered Grimes actually; through an MSI remix.
How did they influence your style & sound?
I grew up listening to metal and was heavily influenced as a guitar player by KoRn. There is something special about the sound of a seven string guitar. I also love doing metal style growl type vocals. I am super passionate about that and how guttural I can get those growls. You can hear them sprinkled through the She album. Mindless Self Indulgence and Grimes inspire the electronic side of me. I am a huge industrial and synth fan thanks to MSI. Grimes has an influence on my vocal style as well. I love the way her voice is so diverse and how it seems to be floating over the music.
What’s the most exciting thing that happened to you recently?
I just got my first Covid Vaccine!! I am really excited because that means I am one step closer to getting back to touring, shooting music videos, and scheduling photo shoots! I was a little nervous because I really hate syringes. They make me so nervous, and I have a tendency to feel rather faint when it comes time to receive a shot or give blood. Luckily, the vaccine was fast and easy. My arm is just a little sore. I am looking forward to getting back to a somewhat normal routine!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am scheduled to go on tour with The Birthday Massacre in July and August of this year in the UK. I am very excited! It has been such a long time since I’ve been able to perform. I really miss it. I plan to book a US tour once the VS crew gets back from the UK.
