VDRSH: a worldwide cultural and sonic melting pot

VDRSH: the best kept secret of Rotterdam, an intelligent danceable fusion from around the world. 7 members, 10 nationalities. Who are these genre bending wizards?

Hi. Tell us your story in 3 sentences.
Hey! Our bass player has the idea to make an awesome group with insane music, comes to study in the Netherlands, meets the trumpet player and slowly the other members are added to the mix. The line up has changed several times since then, but the current line up is the longest running one we’ve ever had.

Tell us something about your last album or your last musical production.
Our last musical production was a 5 track EP recorded at Audioworkx studios in Eindhoven, more specifically in a place called Hoogeloon. That was a real magic moment. We spent 3 days and 3 nights at a small residency just 5 minutes walk from the studio, and lived in a communal environment with each other. That experience really brought the band together, and I urge any other band to do the same. It just makes sense that the more the group interacts with each other outside of the world of music, the music itself just becomes stronger. Questlove from the Roots once said that for a long period of time they had a day in the week where the whole band would just hang out and do stuff together. We didn’t do this exactly, but those days we spent together we’re gold! And we came out with our best record so far. Check it out on our bandcamp, you’ll know when you see it.

What is your “home ground” area? Tell us something about it.
”Home ground.” that’s a tough one. All of us (with the exception of one member) are living in Rotterdam, and all of us (with the exception of one member AGAIN) are from a country outside of the Netherlands. So that being said, we’ll call our home ground Rotterdam… And it’s quite the piece of ground! Had it not been for this town, we would never have come together. The fact that it brings all of these different people together in one place, specially musicians, means that there is ample possibility for massive melting pots to boil and create new brews of sound and light. Despite it not being the most beautiful or welcoming place ever, it’s what it is.

What’s the best live act in your area? tell us something about it.
The best live act in our area? Great question, there are a couple, but I think Re:Freshed Orchestra takes the win. They have just so much energy and power in their music, it’s great to watch their live shows.

Which artists have influenced your style & sound, if any?
Artist that have influenced our sound…. Man we have 7 people in the band, I think the list is massive, but here are a few. We’ll have to put Estradasphere first because they were the catalyst for the bass player to want to form this band, but some (off the top of my head) groups/projects/artists that influenced us greatly include Jaga Jazzist, J Dilla, LTJ Bukem and Snarky Puppy, but the list is much bigger than that….

Any favourite artists?
Favorite artists… here are a couple: Jaga Jazzist, Robert Glasper Experiment, Leos Janacek, Flying Lotus, Joshua Redman, Rage Agaisnt the Machine, LTJ Bukem, Keith Jarrett Trio, Claude Debussy, Exmag, Makoto, Goldie, 4hero, Snarky Puppy, Badbadnotgood, J Dilla, John Zorn, and a gazillion others.

What’s the last live music show you’ve seen?
The last one we’ve seen was Robert Glasper Experiment at Lantaren Venster, and the next one will be Jaga Jazzist at Lantaren Venster again!

Tell us something about your best and your worst memory on the road
Best memory on the road…
Many of them actually, but one of the best was when we traveled to the Canary Islands, took a trip to the highest mountain on Island and spent the night there. The worst…. right now I can only remember when we we’re scheduled to travel in 2 days, and right after the show the Bass player lost his passport! Scary very scary… but we managed to find it after looking for about an hour!

Did you plan to have a tour in the next future? Tell us something about it
Plans for a future tour. Yes. This 2015 we’ll be doing Portugal again, and if all goes well we’ll be hitting Italy for the first time. Also there are talks of doing a couple of dates in London and in Paris, which most probably will happen later this year. If it happens we’ll be announcing a month or two prior and record some music to take there. It’s about time that we take this music to the ears of the big metropolis.

What do you think about LiveTrigger? Did you manage to book any shows?
We dig Livetrigger! We haven’t booked any shows yet no!
