Visual Satiation: Penelope Gazin

Penelope Gazin is definitely one of the most charismatic and prolific ambassadors of Los Angeles’s sparkling artistic scene

Besides being a smart and funny artist, this cheeky humorous girl is also a drummer, a dancer, a fashion designer, a graphic designer, an animator, a comic artist, the co-founder of Witchsy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she managed to lick her own elbow too.

Let’s get closer to this unstoppable force of nature!

Hello Penelope and welcome to Visual Satiation!

Let’s start by introducing yourself: who’s Penelope Gazin, and when does she sleep?

Penelope is a woman and she sleeps 9-10 hours a night but somethings in short and irregular bursts.

You come from a very artistic family where both of your parents are professional artists and your brother, Nick Gazin, is Vice’s art editor (as well as the man behind Run the Jewels amazing covers). Art is definitely in your genes. However, what’s the background that shaped you, and who are your favourite artists?

I am shaped by the wind. My favourite artist is whoeever drew “Where’s Waldo?”.

Martin Handford “Where’s Waldo?”

What triggers your creativity, and what are you working on at the moment?

Self doubt and the need to be heard. I’ve been spending a lot of time on my fashion line

Together with your partner in crime Kate Dwyer you run Witchsy, an online community marketplace for weird art. As young entrepreneurs, you guys had to face several problems when you started the project, but in the end it payed you back. How’s the community going, and what’s the story behind your imaginary co-founder Keith?

We are kinda losing interest so i guess it’s going okay.

Being a business lady is boring I don’t care for it anymore. I am sick about talking about Keith.

You’re a musician as well, can you tell us about your band “Slut Island”? So far, what’s the funniest and the worst experience you had during one of your gigs?

Well on my birthday a fan threw a “fetus” at me while I was singing/drumming.

People thought it was part of the show but it wasn’t and it turned out to be a bag of like mushed up fruit but it hit me in the face and my face was red with fruit juice for the rest of the show.

Everyone was confused.

I didn’t miss a beat though even when getting pelted in the face with a fake “fetus”.

It was throw by an eccentric who I think thought we would think it was funny.

What bands are you currently obsessed with?

I genuinely hate music and only like silence.

Along with other amazing girls, you’re also a member of “Los Angeles Municipal Dance Squad”. The style and the way you guys dance is absolutely hilarious, teasing, and super fun to watch. Would you like to tell us a bit more about that too?

The “LA City Municipal Dance Squad” was started by one of my best friends Angela Trimbur and has changed my life.

It’s where I met my “Slut Island” bandmate Kate Hollowell as well.

It’s an incredible and empowering group of women who have to audition to get on and we meet up every Sunday and sometimes host workshops and we’ve performed for Hilary Clinton and comedy shows and we straddle the line between female empowerment and comedy/raunchiness so it’s a hard thing to really describe what we are.

But we love each other and we love to dance.

Your story doesn’t end here because you design beautiful, weird clothes for your “Fashion Brand Company” too. Would you like to tell us more about it, and who are your all time favourite fashion icons?

I actually don’t know a lot about fashion but Dolly Parton always had cool outfits. I’m not really sure what people learn in fashion school I just made it all up as I went and it’s been working out well.

We all know the advent of social media like Instagram changed the way people look at art. How have you personally adapted to this new landscapes, and are there pros and cons of having lots of followers?

I’ve recently shied away from Instagram quite a bit.

For a while, I was enjoying it but now it’s a bit much and I get a little socially overwhelmed by strangers who feel entitled to my time and energy.

Overall it’s amazing and given me such artistic freedom that I never thought I would have but sometimes I want to delete it and I might become more and more anonymous as time goes by.

What are your phobias and manias?

I am scared I will lose inspiration forever.

Where would your dream solo show location be?

At the bottom of the ocean.

What’s your favourite colour?

Yellow. Like pee pee.

I Hate Myself But In A Fun Way

What’s your favourite place in Los Angeles?

My house. I hate leaving my house.

Lastly, let’s give you just a few minutes to draw a caricature of yourself and see how it goes! Ready? Go!

I never directly draw myself but all my portraits are indirectly me.

This is one of my favorites, its called “shy girl”.

I am not shy because I am insecure I am shy because I fear people will take advantage of my vulnerability.
